University Animation

Valarie's Jump

This is a short animation to test out my abilities as an animator to combine both my 2D and 3D animation within under 3 weeks worth of work.

This scene itself is roughly based on a particular chapter in a book i am writing. i wanted to test out how far i could stretch the animation around her abilities to teleport from place to place and how she would interact with the world in a pressure heavy environment.

With only given less than 1 month to work on this from start to end, and was only limited to keep the animation short, i had to cut back on alot of scenes and maneuvers i wanted to use to show off her abilities and quick thinking. But i am still proud of the work with the timeframe and the limitations i had! Im currently planning an extended version of this with proper sound, short story to go with the situation and voice acting! It'll be a little ambitious to do by myself but it'll be worth it!

Roomates/Tombmates

A short animation about a friendly ghost trying to befriend and get the attention of the living resident of Mr Sophie Harper. Worked on it with a classmate Daisey Allen who worked on the 2D aspect of this while i worked on the 3D and editing.

3D model tests

The character Mr Sophie Harper was inspired by a poem by Shel Silverstein titled "The boy named Sue" and i exprermented on what the character would have neen if he hadnt confronted his father and instead had to read a letter sent to him before he passed. Sophie while hating his father for giving him a female name, is eluded to finding out if his father's last words to him might give some reason why he did what he did.. so he thought..

Fist concept/Storyboards

The first story idea i pitched was instead going to play more like a mockumentry similar to the show The Office or Parks and Recreation. And initially i tried to get Daisy's character to try and haunt Mr Sophie Harper but his blunt obliviousness made all her attempts in vain.

I might consider finishing this up with sound and voice acting.

F in the Chat

A short parody based on the Battle of Waterloo if Napoleon was too obsessed with social media instead of the battle. Its more a commentry on how social media has made us vain and distracted from serious issues right infront of us, and even arounf the world. But we just had too much fun with this one.

Made this with 4 other amazing animators where we got to mix all our best elements to create this Hybrid animation! the 3D was so well made by my other teammates that it perfectly blends into the general art style! I worked on the story and the main 2D animations, Storyboarding, coloring and shading.

"Why Women live longer than Men"

The theme of this animation was centered around the theme of "Man and Woman" to see if we can create a story with that first theme. We had to use a quote that had both those words in the title. My team knew nearly every group was going to find quotes made by people comparing women over men among this approaching wave of a feminist movement. We all fully support this, but we wanted to make an animation different from from the others and instead make a comedy, But we were still limited to having the words "Man and Woman" in the title.

My first initial pitch was to use "Why Women live longer than Men" Based on the circulating meme around men doing tasks in a comically stupid way that could be a hazard to their health if something slips. It had nothing to do with women, but it focused more on why men could die earlier. It also got us thinking of all the other stupid things men do for a cheap thrill. I intended our animation to be a montage of men doing dangerous things. Until my other project mate came with the idea of making a serious. We decided to mix our origingal idea with an actual concern about why Men suffer more workplace injuries and why men have a higher mortality rate compared to women.

The animation is still made in a slapstick Charlie Chaplin vibe, but it still reflects so many factors on why men die on average earlier than women. Many characters in the background reflect different factors such as Drinking and Smoking, workplace health hazards, and other factors if you are able to identify it hidden in the animation.

I mainly worked on the story, the storyboards and 2D animating some scenes. The main downside to this animation was that we made the mistake in allocating different shots to different people and we didnt hace time to correct shots that didnt fit with eachother's artstyle. But we all had great fun working on it and loved how it turned out!

John Brokeneck

At the end of my first year of University at UTS, i was given the full freedom to animate whatever i wanted within a few weeks. I knew all studnets works will be showcased in public on a massive screen. i made this with the full intention of hearing the shrieks of my fellow University Animation year. And boy did they shriek. it was glorious.

No deeper message with this one. just something fun and daring. And no, this was not designed after my own room.. i swear..

Spice Alley

Animation Tests

A short stop-motion animation i made for Spice Alley in Sydney near Central Station.

Just a simple excercise on my 3D rigging skills. Made a silly monster and animated him.

An animation excercise to express weight. i decided to add a bit more to it as looking at videos of myself lifing something heavy i "Prepare" myself and usually comment on the weight beforehand aswell as the typical anticipation. i decided to add as much of myself into this.

Animating a character i designed a few weeks prior to this walk test. Loosely inspired off a mix between a Leshy, the Babayaga, forest spirits, a Babushka, and a cow.

A simple walking animation

The Other Side

A sad and bitter-sweet story about a little girl dying of a sickness in a hospital and the grim reaper believes it is time for her to go to the other side. Only thing is that she has to make the decision herself. Wether she wants to ease her pain and leave the living world behind or fear death is the struggle between the little girl and the grim reaper.

This was just in the storyboard phase while i was working on it in 2017 before the entire project was canceled. I worked on the Story, concept art, and the Storyboards and we intended this animation to be in 3D and to have a cell-shaded approach. Though, nothing was really stopping us from doing this in 2D.

This project was a great experience and i really wished we as a team got to finish it!

A story of an average joe just out of luck but coming to realise all his misery was at the hands of animators.

this animation was made by 4 guys with different roles and was made in 2017. I was incharge of a few scenes and was primerily focused on the 2D scenes and keeping the art style consistant. I only joined this group just after the pre-production process, and my first task was to get the art style of the main character right. Our team manages to pull off pretty impressive 3D assisted scenes which later inspired me to animate a whole short using this method. We all worked very hard and we are happy with how this worked out.

Stick & Stone

Stick and Stone discover a myscheivious lizard around their void deck hangout and discovered it was probably a bad idea to mess with it.

Stick and Stone was a yearly animation practice in Ngee Ann Poly where the students in groups of 4 are given these same 2 characters and need to create an episode pased on these 2 singaporean cats.

This is the first full animation peice i got to work on in my early years of Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 2016. Worked on this with 3 other guys and the production for this was rough. Our biggest mistake was splitting the scenes between the 4 of us and not having someone to enforce the same art style among the scenes we took on. which resulted in 4 very distinct art styles. From here onward, we learned how to comminicate better as a group and not assign roles like how we did here. This was a great learning experience and it was my first attempt to go through a full animation production. My roles in this peice was being the storyboard artist and the storywriter, Editor, sound designer and did the animations from 1:08 onwards.

Other Animation reels and Life-drawing

These are a collection of life-drawing and simple animations i worked on during class back in 2014-2016. nothing too impressive but i felt it was nice to show where i started from and show some non-animation works while i was in Ngee Ann Polytechnic

And many more to come!
